On Thursday, January 21st Bayview’s second graders celebrated the conclusion of their 15th Annual American Red Cross Read-A-Thon.  The auditorium was abuzz with excitement as students performed musical presentations.  The Bayview Book Review Crew, anchored by Tyler Hawkins, encouraged students to read several books that students found particularly enjoyable during this educational and entertaining project.  Due to the recent tragedy in Haiti, there was an unprecedented outpouring of love and support.  For the first time in our Read-A-Thon's history, over $2,500 was raised by Bayview second graders with the support and encouragement of Bayview’s Project Challenge teacher, Ms. Geraldine LaPenne.

During our concluding assembly, certificates were presented to the three students who raised the most money:

  • First place winner Rosniel Piñeyro

  • Second place winner Celeste DeCampi

  • Third place winner Ethan Adeniran

The certificate for the class that raised the most money was given to Ms. Goldstein’s second graders.   Thanks to the effort put in by all the participants, $2857.13 was raised!

In addition, the Nassau County Chapter of the American Red Cross presented a special plaque to our principal, Ms. Wills, in recognition of the amazing work of the late Ms. Cheryl Isreal who created the Read-A-Thon over 15 years ago.  Her visionary commitment to promoting literacy and benevolence serves as her legacy to the Bayview Family, the Freeport community and the world.

From December 7th  through December 11th, The Bayview Avenue School conducted “One Can Make a Difference”, a canned food drive to benefit our local food pantry, Our Holy Redeemer Human Services. We wanted our students to know that all over the world adults and children are taking action to alleviate needs and restore the hope and dignity of those less fortunate.

Rooted in the principles of Foxfire Philosophy, academic instruction at Bayview Avenue School of Arts and Sciences immerses children in authentic learning experiences including goal setting aligned with the New York State standards, active learning and making real world connections.  Teachers as facilitators and collaborators provide students with opportunities to explore and make discoveries independently and in small groups.  Students' curiosity and grade-appropriate topics are incorporated to to create innovative and motivating learning experiences.  It is not uncommon to walk amidst colorful murals inspired by students of different countries, unique animals and their habitats, or by our popular "Artist of the Month."  Evidence of serious scientific inquiry permeates classrooms.  Growing plants, observing pets, taking nature walks, hypothesizing, and experimenting are all in a day's work at the School of Arts and Sciences.

The School theme of arts and sciences is manifested in teacher design curriculum and is daily integrated into instruction and student learning.  Among the magnificent learning experiences at Bayview, Exhibit Night and the Interactive Science Fair are our most celebrated.  Everyone is welcome to witness and indulge in our students' work.  Each class selects a theme and works on rich, integrated units which are attractively displayed as a teaching resource for our students.  Whether it's the solar system, buoyancy, or living organisms, through unique presentations, our children engage in meaningful, challenging learning experiences.  From trained resident experts (a.k.a Bayview Ambassadors) guiding visitors through our building, to pleasant and knowledgeable students manning the science stations, immeasurable talent abounds.

Bayview is the place where "we are a family and learning is fun" and it is no wonder we go to great lengths to keep our families involved.  Families are embraced as partners as they begin the school year in September's back to school orientation and celebration, Family Night.  Active family involvement continues through teacher-produced and enacted childrens' literature-based plays which evolve from selections read in school and the Family Book Club.  Offering teaching strategies and food, productions like "Spaghetti Eddie" and "Strega Nona" are always the talk of our community of learners.

Real world connections are clear.  We have local community, national, and international partnerships with arts, social, health and civic agencies.
Molding great citizens is yet another Bayview goal.  Our Random Acts of Kindness initiative and our Bee Your Best Character Education Program help foster the morality, caring, integrity, and respect with students, and in turn an environment where the school family makes learning emotionally and intellectually rewarding.
